Summer on Soutport Suspended Due to Wrigley Field Concerts

Dear Neighbors:

I sent a statement to the Licensing Committee today regarding the third concert proposed for Saturday night, July 18th and have attached a copy for you.

I want all of you to know that our Board met for hours, to determine whether or not we could even host Summer on Southport this year if the Saturday night concert was allowed.  After exploring in depth every option we could think of including changing the date, reducing it to Sunday only, hosting only the children’s festival, etc., we concluded that none these options were available to us or were not in the best interests of the festival, the residents and many of our Southport businesses who will be adversely impacted by three nights of concerts on top of our festival. Because it is our mission to represent our community in addressing quality of life concerns and as a not-for-profit taking on tremendous risk and expense to host this event, we believe that we have no other choice but to suspend Summer on Southport this year if the Ordinance is approved.

We are very disappointed to have to suspend it for this year, but have already talked to both Alderman Tunney and our festival promoter and have approval to  return in 2010.

We are now working to ensure that in future years we have greater certainty and input into the planning of concerts at Wrigley.  Please feel free to send your thoughts and comments to me at president@southportneighbors.com.

.

Jill Peters, President SNA
